How to Change Memory in Your Computer?

Changing memory in your computer can be one of the most common upgrades people make to a computer.  Here are some steps to follow for upgrading your memory:

1.  First identify how much memory your computer has and how many slots are available and what is in each slot.  You may have 2 to 4 slots and if you have 1gb of memory, it may have either 1gb or 2 500 mb units in it.  In order to see how many memory slots are available, take the side off of your desktop and look.

2.  After you figured out what you have and how it is defined you can figure out what kind of machine you have.  If you have a Dell computer, you will look for the service tag and then do one of two things, go to dell.com and search for parts and accessories or call that department.  With Dell they will either automatically find your computer and scan it for you or you will need to enter the service tag in.  Either way, it is extremely important that you buy the right memory for your machine and in the correct quantities.

3.  Once you have bought the memory from wherever you got it, and received it.  You can install it.  You should find the recommended installation instructions for how to be safe and do a proper installation, but I unplug any power source to the pc, open up the unit and carefully put it in.

4.  Once you have succesfully installed the memory, you can plug it back in and turn on the pc.  You probably will get a message that says something about a change to the configuration has been made, that is a good sign.  Once your operating system loads, you can check to see how much memory was installed and see if it matches what you were looking for.

There you have it, I always recommend being very careful and use these steps only as a guide as each machine can be different.  You should refer to the manufacturer guidelines for both the memory and computer you have.  If you aren’t comfortable with doing this yourself, I would recommend calling a professional to help with that.
