Everyone wants to improve their business. They want it to make more money, be successful and minimize turmoil as much as possible, but really how do you improve your operations. Do you decrease overhead? Do you perform a corporate reorganization? It really is different for each company, but one thing is certain, everyone has an opinion.

As a manager of a department, you are in a position where you want nothing, but your department to be successful. That is great, but what if you are actually hindering other departments. Do you have someone who steps in and says that just isn’t being business smart? In most cases probably not, people tend to work within their own departmental elements and worry only about that. Have you ever asked a manager why they perform tasks in a certain way? Responses tend to consist of, well that is how we have always done it or that is how we did it at my last company, so it must be the right way. So really is there an answer to all this?

I believe so. I believe a company thrives and dies together as a whole. Now all companies are different, from a small to medium to a very large corporation. A large corporation may have to break themselves up in terms of companies, because of diversity in the business operations. Now a business that has 30-100 employees where departments are in constant contact and really need to work together instead of as individuals, then that is where companies may fail. Departments must work together and the leaders in the organization must learn from their staff, and then bring those ideas to meetings where discussions may begin.

Cross training over departments is a very effective way to improve a company’s operations. It allows employees to see how other departments work within their day to day operations. You probably will receive some back lash from other departments, but they should be embracing those efforts for the bigger picture.

Other effective ways, include having an in house business consultant or contacting a consulting firm to review your company’s operations. These tend to take longer and sooner or later the in house business consultant may be too involved and start to miss things. I suggest reviewing the overall operations once a year. That is usually the timeframe where most things tend to evolve into standard day to day tasks.

Businesses all across the world are always trying to improve their operations. I suggest trying some of the related tasks above and always ask yourself “Are we operating as efficiently as we could be”?
